North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd. (NEEPCO) has signed two Memorandum of Agreements with the Government Of Meghalaya on 20th December 2007 for implementation of 90 MW Mawphu Hydro Electric Project and 500 MW Garo Hills Thermal Power Project in Meghalaya. The signing of the MOAs has been possible with the initiative taken by the Government Of Meghalaya and the Ministry of Power, the Government of India. Though NEEPCO has its headquarters in Shillong , the state capital of Meghalaya since April 1976, these two projects will be the first venture of NEEPCO in the state of Meghalaya. It is to mention that Shri Sushilkumar Shinde , Union Power Minister in his visit to Shillong on 29th Jun 2007 had advised the Government Of Meghalaya to hand over the above projects to NEEPCO for execution.
NEEPCO has already submitted the Detailed Project Report of 90 MW Mawphu HEP to Central Electricity Authority in March 2007. The Mawphu Hydro Electric Project, to be located in East Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya , envisages utilization of the water of the river Umiew to run 2 nos 45 MW each generating units. The project shall be developed to ensure optimum utilization of hydro potential in conformity with policies of the Government of India in the most environment, eco and people friendly manner. The preconstruction activities of the project are expected to be started within 18 months , subject to receipt of all statutory clearances.
On the other hand , the 500 MW Garo Hills Thermal Power Project envisages utilisation of coal from Simsang/Darrengiri Coal fields of Meghalaya. The Garo Hills Project envisages utilisation of the best international technology to make the Project environment friendly. NEEPCO has identified a suitable land near Rongjeng at the East Garo Hills District. The Project shall be commissioned within 36 months from the date of investment decision from the Government of India.
It is expected thatthe above two projects will bring many socio-economic benefits to the people of Meghalaya in addition to direct and indirect employment oppurtunities. With the active cooperation from the State Government and also from the people of neighbouring villages, NEEPCO is confident that the two projects will be completed within the scheduled time.
Presently with an installed Capacity of 1130 MW, NEEPCO is meeting around 66% of total power requirement of the North Eastern Region. |
